Last Wednesday around 1 p.m., a St. Charles resident had to make what was likely one of the most unusual 911 calls of their life. According to dispatch recordings from Saginaw County Animal Care & Control, the caller reported having “a monkey wearing a diaper that’s on their porch trying to get inside their house.”

The dispatcher’s calm delivery of this rather extraordinary situation might make you chuckle: “I guess it belongs to their new neighbors.” Sometimes the most surreal moments in life happen right in our own backyards – or in this case, on our front porches!

Meet Brazil: The Adventurous Neighbor

By the time animal control officers arrived on the scene, the female spider monkey named Brazil had already made her way back home next door. Talk about a quick resolution! Rachel Horton, the SCACC Director, shared that officers were able to speak with Brazil’s owner and observed the monkey safely inside her proper home.

The good news? Brazil appeared to be healthy, active, and well cared-for – just perhaps a little too curious about what the neighbors were up to. We’ve all had those moments of wandering where we shouldn’t, though most of us aren’t wearing diapers while we do it!

A Pattern of Unique Pets

Interestingly, this isn’t Brazil’s owner’s first time making headlines with her unusual animal companions. Back in 2017, the same woman brought a squirrel monkey to the Bay County Court Facility – tucked away in her purse, which she then put through the X-ray scanner. Some people certainly have a flair for the dramatic when it comes to their pet choices!

If you’re wondering whether having a monkey as a neighbor is even legal, you might be surprised to learn that Michigan doesn’t have laws prohibiting monkeys as pets. Additionally, St. Charles doesn’t have local ordinances limiting primate ownership. So while it might be unusual, Brazil’s living situation is perfectly above board.
